The Logic to Create team are currently conducting a first phase research survey to help form the basis of a long term research and development project.
The project is entitled “Data Privacy and Protection Under the Impact of Rapid Digital Adoption” and will look at challenges UK SMEs face around:
- Data Privacy;
- Data Protection;
- Cyber Security;
- Digital adoption;
- Information rights;
- Raising awareness;
- The limitations of SME practice, and;
- Complying with evolving legislation.
The project aims to find practical innovative solutions to tackle these challenges and to enable UK SMEs to remain competitive and trustworthy not only in the UK but on a global business scale.
Data driven business
“Data is the new oil. It’s valuable, but if unrefined it cannot really be used. It has to be changed into gas, plastic, chemicals, etc to create a valuable entity that drives profitable activity; so must data be broken down, analysed for it to have value.” Clive Humby, UK Mathemetician and architect of Tesco’s Clubcard, 2006
Having worked with small and large organisations who all use data in different ways for similar outcomes, the idea of processing data is exciting as we are led to believe that we will be faced with great outcomes such as, increased sales due to knowing and understanding our clients and customers better from the data they provide us.
But this does not happen overnight and the actual processing of data, for some is cumbersome, it requires strategy, staff, systems, time, money, rules, regulations and analysis. Sometimes we need to be able to predict trends and make forecasts, data takes a lot of work and processing data is probably not what an SME owner envisioned for their dream business. However we must continue to process data in order to survive and in having to process data our next key concern is keeping the data private and protected.
Digital driven Business
Small businesses that want to grow are using digital to achieve success
Online security concerns are now the leading barrier to doing more online. UK Business Digital Index 2017…
These two statements already highlight a major conflict where some SME owners are aware of the business benefits of using digital but are apprehensive of going online due to the risks. This has also been evident from talks and workshops we have delivered where SME owners have raised their concerns of going digital in their business whilst freely admitting to using online banking, social media and smart technology in their personal lives. There is a clear separate thought process going on that needs to be aligned.
With all this in mined, this research project stems from the need to raise levels of awareness, encourage business owners to align their thought processes of using digital in their personal and business lives and to help find the best ways for small business owners to thrive in a digital data driven society where customer loyalty and trust is gained and maintained through the implementation of the right data privacy and protection practices.
For the first phase of the project we are gathering evidence to support our research, which will also help form the basis for phase 2. We value your opinion and would very much appreciate if would complete and share our data privacy and protection awareness questionnaire, which can be found here.
